WORLD AUTISM DAY: APRIL 2, 2018: VICKIE ROBERT FOUNDATION NIGERIA, EDUCATES PUPILS OF ROSAFIELD PEACE INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL IBADAN,OYO STATE ON ‘AUTISM’

This year, Vickie Robert Foundation Nigeria, Clinical Nurse Manager, Joseph Chukwuma (RN, RPN) helped pupils at ROSAFIELD PEACE INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL IBADAN, OYO STATE, TO UNDERSTAND ‘AUTISM’

Despite the growing number of children with autism educated in mainstream classrooms, alot of pupils are not familiar with autism, despite some recognition of the disability, they had little knowledge of its characteristics, such as communication and social skill challenges.

If students are uninformed about a disability, they often attribute undesirable social behaviors to individual choice. For example, a classmate may interpret avoidance of eye contact as rude instead of as a behavioral characteristic of autism.

Helping children and young people to understand autism can be the key to peer acceptance. This can lead to a reduction in bullying.

270 SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS GET SCHOLARSHIPS FROM THE OONI OF IFE

270 students shortlisted from 37 secondary schools selected across the six states of the South West have become beneficiaries of a South West Educational Scholarship scheme by The Arole Oduduwa and Ooni of Ife, Ooni Adeyeye Ogunwusi, Ojaja II.

Coordinator of the Ooni’s Save Education Project Adeyanju Olaoluwa when some of the beneficiaries and their parents paid a “thank you” visit to Ooni Ogunwusi on Wednesday, at his Ile Oodua Palace in Ile-Ife.

Olaoluwa said that the project was entirely sponsored by Ooni, as part of his landmark achievements in the last two years on the throne of his forefathers, adding that the monarch had been paying the school fees of these less privileged.

According to him, the Ooni of Ife asked him to shortlist students that were financially constraint and they were able to shortlist students from 37 schools.

The Coordinator added that 68 students had their WAEC fees paid in 23 of the schools already visited, while 14 others would be visited soon, saying Ooni should be commended for his fatherly role in the lives of these children.

He said that so many times, the royal father had compelled some politicians to come to the aids of these students with no positive result till date.

The coordinator urged NGOs, philanthropists, politicians and meaningful Nigerians to emulate Ooni in assisting the less privileged in the society.

Responding, the Ooni returned all the glory unto Almighty God, who he said gave him the opportunity to care for the needy.

The Supreme Head of Yoruba Race worldwide called on the students to be orderly, humble and respectful, adding that they should ensure that they face their studies squarely for brighter future.

The monarch recalled that he learnt shoe making when things were tough and boasted of making his shoes by himself.

He urged them never to lose hope and advised them to be ambitious, discipline, prayerful and focus for them to get to their promised land.

Mr Yemi Opawoye-Adeagbo, the Vice-Principal, Ilobu High School, Ilobu, Osun, acknowledged the traditional ruler for assisting all and sundry including the less privileged students.

Mrs. Paulina Nwachukwu, of Saint Paulina Missionary School, Lagos, who spoke on behalf of the beneficiaries, applauded Ooni for his good gesture towards the less privileged.

Just how healthy are you? Do you know you are at risk for diseases like Diabetes, Heart disease, Blood Pressure, Cholesterol, Vision, Dental, and Cancer? There may not be one simple, universal diagnostic test to determine your health status, but knowing certain factors about your health can help you determine your status and risk for illness and disease.
Asking yourself these four simple questions can largely determine how healthy your lifestyle is.
1. Are you a non-smoker?
2. Is your Body Mass Index (BMI) less than 30?
3. Do you engage in mild or moderate physical activity at least 2.5 hours per week?
4. Do you eat at least five servings of fruits and vegetables daily?

These questions can be highly predictive of how likely you are to suffer early morbidity and mortality from diabetes, cancer, heart disease, dementia and other health problems.
We often see headlines that announce new or potential screening tests. Keeping up with new developments is a good idea, but it’s even more important not to overlook the many tests and screenings already available to improve our health and the quality of our lives. Why is it so important for us to be knowledgeable about our health? It is important because if you have a deviation from the normal, you could correct it early. That’s what we mean

when we say prevention is better than cure. It is better than waiting until when things have gone haywire before you start running around.

Get a Free Health Screening and be better informed about your health. Learn where you stand on such indicators as Blood Pressure, Cholesterol, Vision, Dental Care and more.

“PERSONS LIVING WITH DISABILITIES IN NIGERIA,  ARE BEING MALTREATED” – Mrs Lois Auta

The Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Cedar Seed Foundation (CSF), Mrs. Lois Auta, has lamented that people living with disabilities in Nigeria are  being maltreated, rated as second class citizens and subjected to unfriendly behaviour in the country.Auta, who is also an advocate for disabled people’s right in Nigeria, stated this while on a courtesy visit to the Minister of Science and Technology, Dr Ogbonnaya Onu, in his office in Abuja.
She said if given the opportunity, those living with disabilities in  Nigeria had the capacity to contribute their quota to the development of the country, saying there was ability in disability.

She lamented that they did not  have inclusive education, health, technology, as well as transport and mobility. Auta, said: “We have right to health, right to movement, right to transport, right to education, right to employment, right to technology and any other thing you can mention. Persons with disabilities have the experiences,
they have the potentials, they have the ability and the gift but lack facilities to be more comfortable.

Now in its eighth year, the crisis shows no sign of abating.

The World Humanitarian Day global theme for 2017 is NotATarget. To mark this year’s World Humanitarian Day, the VRF Nigeria would like to focus on the protection of civilians in conflict, particularly from sexual abuse and exploitation arising from displacement, as well as the dangers faced by humanitarian aid workers.
In North East Nigeria, women and children continue to suffer sexual abuse and exploitation at an alarming rate. Women, men and children face grave human rights violations and sexual and gender-based violence, including rape. Since the start of the conflict in 2009, more than 20,000 people have been killed, countless women, boys and girls abducted and children drafted as so-called “suicide” bombers. Girls have been used in the vast majority of these attacks.
VRF Nigeria would also wish to use this occasion to remember the tragic incident that led to the death and injury of civilians and aid workers in the bombing of an IDP camp by the Nigerian Security Forces on 17 January 2017 in Rann, in what was then a newly accessible area in North-East Nigeria. Such events, along with other access challenges faced by the humanitarian community, demonstrate the very real danger of providing assistance in conflict-affected areas.
Members of VRF Nigeria remain committed to supporting humanitarian efforts in North-Eastern Nigeria by providing urgently needed food, water, shelter, education, and medical care as well as addressing protection issues of the affected population.

FORMER PRESIDENT OLUSEGUN OBASANJO BACKS NDDIS WITH THREE PLANNED SUPPORT INITIATIVES

FORMER president Chief Olusegun Obasanjo has thrown his weight behind the Fourth Nigerian Direct Diaspora Investment Summit (NDDIS) taking place in London next month and plans to unveil three initiatives at the event.

Being organised for the fourth time, NDDIS 2017 is focusing on developing the government’s plans to diversify the Nigerian economy and end the dependency on oil even as it encourages collaboration between Nigerians in the Diaspora and companies in Nigeria in all the sectors. It aims to tap into the potential of the diaspora as well as attract foreign direct investors, who will be linked up with the federal and Nigerian state governments.
Among those who will be attending will be Governor Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos State; Senator Lanre Tejuosho, the chairman of the senate committee on health; Hon Abike Dabiri-Erewa, the special assistant to President Muhammadu Buhari on diaspora affairs. Now Chief Obasanjo has said he will send Ayo Aderinwale, the deputy coordinator of the Obasanjo Library to represent him at the event.
In addition, the African Leadership Forum (ALF) an initiative of Chief Obasanjo is set to be represented by Dr Olumide Ajayi, the chief executive of the organisation. Founded in Nigeria in 1988, the ALF was set up to help improve the current quality of leadership across Africa while at the same time helping to train the next generation of leaders for the continent.
At the summit in London next month, the ALF will be partnering with NDDIS to launch a diaspora integration and investment support scheme (Diiss). It is designed to help support diasporans as they return to Nigeria to set up their businesses through induction courses and other initiatives.
NDDIS chairman Chief Bimbo Afolayan said: “The overall name for the initiative is DIISS but it is made up of three parts. This includes the diaspora adaptive programme, the portfolio investment scheme and the direct business ownership scheme.
“Taking place at the School of Oriental Studies (Soas) in central London on July 13 and 14, NDDIS has identified 250 existing diasporan businesses that will like to set up their models in Nigeria to provide employment. It will be followed by a summit dinner on Saturday 15th July and among those supporting the event are UK Trade & Investment, the Afford UK, Soas, the British African Business Alliance and the Foreign and Commonwealth Office.”
Mr Aderinwale provides consulting services for several international agencies, including the United Nations, European Union and the African Union. He added that, the vice president, Professor Yemi Osinbajo has shown an interest in the summit and will be sending a delegation if he is unable to attend.

GOVERNOR AMBODE TO ATTEND NIGERIAN DIASPORA DIRECT INVESTMENT SUMMIT 2017

Lagos State’s Governor Ambode to attend NDDIS 2017 LAGOS State governor Akinwunmi Ambode has joined the list of government officials who will attend the fourth Nigerian Direct Diaspora Investment Summit (NDDIS) in London on July 13 and 14.
Put together to help Nigerians in the diaspora connect with the country and enable them set up their businesses in Nigeria, NDDIS is aimed at mobilising a very resourceful but silent business class. It is also an opportunity to identify potential sources of finance, technology and technical skills that could boost the promotion and stimulation of enterprise and the creation of jobs in Nigeria.

Being organised for the fourth time, NDDIS 2017 is focusing on developing the government’s plans to diversify the Nigerian economy and end the dependency on oil. As part of this drive, the likes of Governor Ambode, Senator Lanre Tejuosho and Hon Abike Dabiri-Erewa, the special assistant to President Buhari on diaspora affairs have all agreed to address the two-day summit.

NDDIS chairman Chief Bimbo Afolayan, said: “We are delighted to have had several prominent government functionaries agree to attend. However, we are not relenting in our efforts to attract more and we are expecting at least five state governors, the heads of several parastatals and representatives of the private sector.

“Even the vice president Professor Yemi Osinbajo has said he may attend subject to the dictates of his schedule. Should he not be able to attend, he has said he will send a representative, so things are really looking up at the moment.”
It is believed that solid minerals minister and former Ekiti State governor Kayode Fayemi is also considering attending the event to woo investors into the solid minerals sector. About four other governors are also considering making the trip to attend the event and exploit the investment opportunities NDDIS offers.
David Smith, the chairman on the British African Business Alliance, added: “NDDIS is about attracting foreign direct investment into Nigeria from both multinationals and the diaspora. Some of this investment will be huge that go towards major infrastructural projects and some will go towards the development of cottage industries.
“So far, things are pointing towards a very successful event as the presence of the Lagos State governor indicates that there will be opportunities in infrastructure like transport, housing, healthcare and education, while the solid minerals minister is clearly looking at significant economic diversification. I hope some of the other governors who attend come up with opportunities in other sectors like agriculture, food processing and manufacturing.”
Taking place at School of Oriental Studies in central London on July 13 and 14, NDDIS has identified 250 existing diasporan businesses that will like to set up their models in Nigeria to provide employment. Among those supporting the summit are UK Trade & Investment, the Business Council for Africa, the British African Business Alliance and the Foreign and Commonwealth Office.
